World Shocked That 242 Years After Revolution American President Doesn't Bow To British Royalty
When President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania met Queen Elizabeth II for the first time, it was a much anticipated event. It was a very uneventful greeting until Trump shaking hands with the queen as he does every world leader. Yes... believe it or not, he actually shook the queen's hand.
The media and the global public in general were quick to jump on the royal slight as the president did not bow, nor did Melania curtsy. While these are only traditional forms of greeting, there is no official protocol. Still, everyone knows you bow to the queen, right?
It seems however that President Trump is carrying on an American tradition of not bending the knee to tyrants, started by the signers of America's Declaration of Independence [That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown.] For his part Trump said he thought the meeting went well. "I didn't bow to her. She didn't ask for my autograph or beg for me to not fire her. So I think we are even. She's a nice lady. She is short. And of course her predecessors couldn't protect the English colonies from the American farmers. So that wasn't good. I think she has lost a lot of her empire. Sad. England needs a queen who will make England great again. I'm sure I could do it. But she seems to be a nice person."
Social media blew up with attacks on the President for not showing the common courtesy of bowing and acknowledging the Queen's inherent power simply by her being born into a ruling elite family. People called him 'clueless,', 'disgraceful,' 'unBritish,' and 'very American.' As one 22 year-old Twitter user put it, "I don't know who this United States President thinks he is... but Elizabeth was queen when he was 5 years-old. Show some respect, and loyalty. Uhhh... History Lesson... America hasn't always been free from the rule of a monarchy."
