Photos Surface Of John MacArthur In 'Prosperity Face' At Joel Osteen Service
Rev. John MacArthur has spent much of his ministry establishing himself as an evangelicals evangelical. Week after week he delivers a solid conservative Calvinistic sermon. So you can imagine the surprise and embarrassment that hit the evangelical community when photos surfaced this week of what appears to be Rev. John MacArthur sitting without a suit and apparently in awe of the message being delivered by prosperity preacher, Joel Osteen. MacArthur, who usually frowns is seen in the photo nearly smiling.
Ravi Zacharias, a preeminent evangelical leader was quick to awkwardly point out, “We’ve probably all done things we aren’t proud of. Time will tell if Mac was actually seeking spiritual insight from Osteen, or if it was a joke. Many evangelicals have put on a ‘prosperity face’ in order to get a laugh.”
“Prosperity face” is that look of awe and anticipation one has when they are listening to a spiritual guru who may prophesy material, health, and financial gain over the audience. Religious expert, Conrad Dubois explains the controversy. “We have seen this look on MacArthur’s face before. But it usually comes when he is reading the Bible, or a commentary. To see him act like this toward a person he has long considered a heretic is very unusual.”
MacArthur will be addressing the photo this morning during his church service, but released a statement to the press. “I’m sorry if that photo offended anyone, but if it did, that’s tough. The truth is the truth. I had no choice in the matter. I had to be in that place with that face. Would I do it again? Only if God made me do it again. I can tell you this… that Osteen is quite a communicator. And he spoke some very positive things to me. So there is that. You want a real scandal? Check out Joel’s phone. I’ll guarantee you he has a huge cache of my podcasts downloaded there.”
