Pastor Resigns Church To Take Job At Sleep Study Center
They say you should find the job that suits you. Pastor Wilbur Gilbert has finally found his. For several years he preached every Sunday at Nodding Hill Baptist Church. And for several years he didn’t have a sense of fulfillment. But recently that changed when he was offered a beefy contract with Comfort Sleep Studies in Atlanta, Georgia.
Rev. Gilbert recalls the journey, “We had some guests one Sunday and as they were leaving after the sermon the wife asked me, ‘Is that how you preach all the time?’ I assured her that it was my regular style. She said that it was remarkable. While I was preaching, there were at least 23 people dozing. I hadn’t thought anything of it. People had joked with me for years about how they loved my preaching style because it helped them relax and even sleep. Well, I thought it was a joke. But it was apparently true.”
Darlene Crane is a recruiter at Comfort Sleep Studies and says Rev. Gilbert is exactly what they are looking for. “I think he originally saw it as a negative thing. But Rev. Crane has the perfect soothing voice and speaking pattern. He can help many people who have struggled to find sleep. I talked to him a few times about joining our team. He resisted because he felt like God had called him to share the Gospel. I told him that we have approximately 25,000 people come through our program in a year. We came to very solid financial terms, and the good reverend was willing to embrace the fact that he is one of the most boring preachers in America.”
Church member Gladys Gentry is disappointed that her pastor is leaving. “We went to a lot of churches seeking a place where we could be comfortable. It isn’t just Pastor Gilbert’s voice that is soothing. He preaches the Bible in a way that puts you right at ease. My husband and I are thinking about moving to Atlanta and entering the sleep study just so we can continue hearing the pastor. Until then we will just keep watching Joel Osteen. Again… soothing voice, soothing message.”
