Pastor Fired After Calling Adultery Sin
Pastor Peter Simpson of CrossWay Church was placed on administrative leave, and then fired after publicly declaring that various activities are sin. Janice Donovan of the church leadership board said, "It was the right thing. The other day I saw where a nationwide fitness company had to terminate one of its executives for tweeting out that homosexuality is sin. So Pastor Simpson... Peter had to have seen this coming."
The board listed several instances where the pastor had called out sin from the pulpit, as well as on social media. According to the report, "Within the last month alone Peter Simpson has called homosexuality, adultery, racism, filthy talk, and gossip sin. These are his personal views that resulted in insensitive remarks which do not reflect the values of our organization. Simpson was using the Bible to condemn certain practices, but we value everyone's right to believe and live as they want."
"It is true," admits Simpson. "I recently did a sermon series on the sins of our day. I preached it straight from the Bible. I didn't call things sin that are simply objectionable to me personally. I wasn't trying to offend anyone. I offered hope of redemption through Jesus Christ."
Board member Donovan hopes it is a wake-up call to other preachers across America. "There was a time when you could preach against homosexuality and murder. You could get away with calling sinners sinners in the 1800's. But sinners are the very people we are trying to reach with God's love. If a person walks into a church and hears the preacher calling gossip 'sin' and those who gossip 'sinners,' are they really going to want to receive salvation from God? I privately talked with several of the ladies in the church about it on multiple occasions, and we don't think so. If you shouldn't call someone a sinner at the gym, you shouldn't do it in God's house."
