Man Who Raises Hand For Salvation Every Sunday Caught Selling Eternal Life On Craigslist
Bud Rogers is in church most Sundays. He sits near the back on the right hand side. At the end of every service Pastor Ronald asks everyone to bow their head and close their eyes. While no one is looking around he asks who is unsure of their standing with God and wants to be saved. If Bud is at church, at least one hand will go up.
For a long time Pastor Ronald was concerned that Bud didn’t understand the question. “I was very clear with the question. I was looking for first time salvations. I would even ask a separate question for those who wanted to recommit, or confess something, etc. But Bud would only raise his hand for a first time salvation. This went on for about 6 months. I’d say he got saved maybe 18-20 times.”
Recently Pastor Ronald asked Bud to stay after church for a chat. The pastor said that one of the men in the church was on Craigslist looking for a tree stand, and came across an ad for ‘eternal life.’ “Do you know anything about that, Bud?” Bud quickly responded, “Yes, pastor.” Shocked, the pastor responded, “What is going on?” Bud looked perplexed. “Well, every week you offer salvation. And you also tell us we should be offering it to others. If I can sell guns, and camo, and baling wire on Craigslist, I can surely offer the most important thing a person can have. So far I’ve had over 15 people take me up on it. Isn’t that great, pastor?”
Pastor Ron didn’t want to crush Bud’s spirit, but couldn’t approve of selling salvation. “Well, Bud. It is great that people are getting saved. And it is great that you are being a Craigslist missionary. But the money part of it…” Bud interjected, “Don’t worry pastor. I’m tithing it.” With that, he patted the befuddled pastor on the shoulder, and headed for the door.
