Hipster Woman Disappointed That She Got No Swag In Exchange For Missionary Offering
Dawn Wagner has a giving heart. She actually loves to give. It is one of her favorite things to do. She especially enjoys giving to cool organizations that are doing amazing things around the world. But her generous spirit was recently tested during a missionary service at her church.
“I’m an easy touch for support,” says Dawn. “My friends call me a ‘cause freak.’ Last year I gave to several organizations. And I have the ‘swag’ to prove it. I gave to help dig wells in Africa and I got a rockin’ insulated water bottle. I gave to help rescue girls trapped in human trafficking and I got a sweet tote made by some of the rescued girls. I gave to support spring break missions and got a bottle of organic poppy seed sunscreen. I even got a t-shirt for giving to a clothing drive for Haiti. Swag from mission organizations is my favorite.”
But something happened recently that rocked Wagner’s giving heart. “So, recently our missionaries to some island in the south Pacific were speaking at our church. I was excited to give, and couldn’t wait to see what I would get back to add to my collection. Maybe a bag of exotic fair-trade coffee? Perhaps some unique jewelry? Possibly even a Target gift card? But nothing. There was no swag. Not even a Lauren Daigle cd.”
The young benefactor had to work through some feelings. “At first I remember thinking, ‘I can’t even.’ All the feels were gone. I had giver regret for days. But then I realized that they aren’t from here. I mean, they are but they aren’t, right?!? They only come around every few years. So I’m sure they don’t know exactly how this side of missions works. So I will pray for them. I may even drop them a note to encourage them to update their approach. It would be helpful if they understood that there is a blessing in giving back and there is a give and take in sacrifice. I’m sure it will help their ministry.”
