GOP Is Now Largest Christian Denomination In America
For many years the Southern Baptists have been the largest Christian denomination in America. But over the last two years, a shift has occurred that moved the Republican Party past the SBC into the top spot. The largest transfer of membership has not actually come from the Baptist denominations, but from the Assemblies of God.
Former AG pastor, G.T. Manning explains some of the reason for the transfer of so many. “One of things many of us looked at was the amount of persecution taking place toward the GOP. We weren’t being persecuted for our faith like they were being persecuted for their policies. Also, look at the sense of community online. You can’t hardly go onto social media without running across articles about GOP issues.”
Several theologically conservative denominations are now experiencing what mainline denominations experienced several decades ago. Rev. Judith Severance, a United Methodist minister remembers, “Many of our people saw an opportunity to join the Democratic denomination. There they could support homosexuality and abortion and not have to defend it from Scripture, which they weren’t familiar with anyway. I think the same is happening with the move of many to the GOP denomination. The one thing they have that we didn’t is their own TV stations. TBN and FOX News are basically sister channels. So they have the religious-political media infrastructure.”
Pastor Manning is excited about the way people are now digging into denominational material to defend public policies and politicians. “Some of our women and men are spending all day sharing articles about heroes of the faith Trump and Kavanaugh, and even researching Clinton, Comey and others in the enemy’s camp. Many of these people never researched the Bible like that, or even our own denomination history. It is a new day.”
