Financial Security Breach At Church Reveals Names Of All 7 Tithers
Bedford Falls Baptist Church is currently reviewing its financial security measures after a recent financial security breach where the names of all of the tithers in the church were revealed. There are only seven tithers in the church of 275, but it has caused some problems.
Thelma Lewellen, or ‘Thelma Lou’ as she is known, has been church treasurer for 13 years. In all that time, she has never been off by a penny on the church financial records. But this month she inadvertently exposed the names of all of the attendees who tithe. “I was finishing the report on Monday as I always do,” recalls Thelma Lou. “I always send a copy of the report via email to Sister Vaughan as an accountability measure. Unfortunately on that day I had an email open that she had sent me. I replied and sent the report attachment. What I didn’t realize was that the email was one of those cute inspirational stories that she sent to like 50 people. My financial report always starts with our regular tithers obviously. Next thing I know, my phone blows up.”
Larry Cumberbatch, one of the seven named tithers says, “At first it is a little disconcerting to realize that your giving habits are revealed. But then I realized that it is God’s money anyway. If He wants to talk about where it came from, that’s fine with me. Actually, it seems that it isn’t the tithers who are shaken up by the incident… but those who didn’t make the list.”
An anonymous member who did not make the list and only identified himself as a deacon is furious. “How does this happen? My giving is between me and God. It is my money. It is private…just like my faith. I’ll be honest, I think it was intentional.” When asked to explain why he thought that to be the case, he replied, “Well… the next Sunday the offering was up by 200%.”
