Church Couples Employ Young Woman As Nanny Telling Her Singleness Is Her Ministry
You can call it 'The Nanny Club.' Several couples at Alive Worship Center have employed Sarah Gentry as their group nanny. The reasons are obvious. Sarah is good with kids. The parents are not.
According to Jim Pardue, the leader of the nanny club, it works out good for everybody. "Look, we are all couples of young kids. Our wives don't want to spend all day with them. They want to work or just hang out. Sarah is a nice girl. She is fine doing all of the mother things. She even does a lot of the wife things. My wife Brandy doesn't even have to cook now... or do the laundry. Sarah does it all. It's great. She's like a second wife and mother in our family."
Brandy adds, "It wasn't easy to get to this place. Sarah wanted to get married and have her own family. Obviously that wasn't going to work for us. So we had to convince her that her singleness and gifting to take care of other people's children for them is a gifting. And beyond that, it is a ministry. We have 3 other couples that use Sarah for this 'ministry.' We keep telling her that God has her own family out there for her and she just needs to be patient and enjoy her singleness as she raises our kids. We try to keep her busy to keep her away from single guys, and we pay her less than minimum wage to help her feel like it is truly a ministry."
For her part, it seems Sarah is letting go of her dream to have her own family. "I just feel so fulfilled in my ministry to those who can't raise their own kids. They have money and talent, but they express to me that they don't have the gifting to be a spouse or parent. By me doing my part in raising their children, it gives the women more time to do what they want. By the time I find my own husband and children, I will be all practiced up... and probably 63."
Steve, one of the other parents in the club tries to encourage Sarah. "I know she wonders if she will ever find her own family. Recently I told her to not doubt God. I even played the 'God told me' card. I said, "God revealed to me that your name is 'Sarah.' And remember, Sarah in the Bible had a child when she was an old lady. So don't give up on your dream." Steve says that he could see she was still down, so he told her that they would be taking a cruise in a few months. Sarah was excited. She had never watched three children on a cruise before. What a great chance to perform her ministry while Steve and his wife enjoy a kid-free vacation.
