Christian Media Critic Crushed To Find Real Critics Think He Is 'Cheesy'
Ron Swathmore has been writing reviews of Christian media for about 25 years. During that time, like many who review Christian music and films, he has made a name for himself as he picks apart and ridicules the low quality of most Christian musicians, filmmakers, and actors.
"Every week, I would review an album and a movie that came out of the Christian market," Swathmore says. "It was not unusual for me to give them low marks for their 'artistry' as they seemed to try and copy a secular artist who was doing a spectacular job at their craft. Sure, you would have your Switchfoot and your Gungor. But mostly it was your Newsboys and Kirk Camerons, putting out low level entertainment. I would call them 'wannabes' and 'cheesy'. Most of my followers couldn't get enough."
Then last month as Ron was clicking around the web, he came across a well-known entertainment critic who was critiquing him. The critic wrote, "Ron Swathmore loves to slam what he sees as a lack of quality in Christian media. But who is slamming Swathmore? I've got news for him. If he ever gets outside of his safe bubble of the campy Christian critique industry, he may just find that there is good and bad art everywhere. But this 'cheesy wannabe' apparently thinks only Christians put out bad content. Maybe he should read his own reviews. - Signed, Art Shipler (a real critic)"
Swathmore was devastated when he read the review of his work. "I thought it was cool to make fun of Christian entertainment. I thought everyone just liked to share my crushing reviews. I had no idea there were professional critics checking out my work. I mean... I'm just a Christian critic. I'm not a professionally trained writer. How about cutting me some slack?"
Not likely, Ron. Not likely.
